recipe archive

(Dec 04) Digital video (3:39 min)

The process of making a meal was filmed and then edited. The individual clips, each no more than 2 seconds long, were reordered and labelled in groups according to the type of motion they feature. The original sound of each clip was retained.

In many ways this project is a re-staging of the Archived Week. Preparing food is a process whose 'archiving' is already well established in the genre of recipes and cookery programmes, which focus on how to achieve the end product being cooked. Here I decontextualise each minute event and assign the actions alternative meanings, taking their intrinsic qualities of movement and shape as their defining features.
