it is not that nothing can be done but rather than something must be done and we cannot be sure what to do

hands
A hand writes continuously and purposefully, but the nib of the pen never moves from its point on the page.

This work is a re-staging of my earlier ‘Writing without Moving’ video. Its new title is taken from Dermot Moran’s explanation of Derrida’s position on moral responsibility, given that his project of deconstruction is suspicious of any definitive system of value. In using Moran’s words I aim to present my work as a forceful and decisive proposition of intent which is nevertheless open, inconclusive and ambiguous. From this tension emanates a feeling of frustration as the hand continues to write with purpose towards some end-point that never comes.
