(Jan 07) Video (4:05 mins)

An experiment in non-linear writing using forks and knitting.
The video continues the concerns of ‘Envelope Constructions’: the possibility of writing an abstract narrative without language, but which operates within the discourse of non-linear writing identified by Derrida and exemplified by Cixous and Deleuze. Unlike ‘Envelope Constructions’, the narrative props in ‘Forks’ seem active rather than passive, and so it is the text itself that moves purposefully towards events that seem to have no cause or conclusion. The activity of the forks and knitting recalls Moran’s description of Derrida’s moral stance in light of his project of deconstruction: ‘It is not that nothing can be done, but rather that something must be done and that we cannot be sure what to do’.
